The field of nonsmooth dynamics is growing fast, both in the kinds of applications being studied (such as earthquakes, power grids, ocean currents, predator-prey and trade systems, etc.) and particularly in the geometrical theory of “maps with gaps” and discontinuous vector fields. When switches, impacts, or decision making occur in a system, they can lead to singularities and bifurcations that do not appear in smooth dynamics. They cause phenomena such as a curse of dimensionality, period adding, and determinacy breaking. Because these do not happen in smooth systems, one of the most interesting current challenges is to understand the relationship between smooth and nonsmooth systems using methods of singular perturbations.
